SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES IMPACTED by Flood & Fire

We’re pleased to share that we’ve successfully completed constructing 45 transitional homes in ward No. 4 & 5 of Ishworpur Municipality, Sarlahi under our project: “Lifeline Shelters in Nepal”. These homes were built for families in critical economic need whose houses were also completely destroyed by the Fuljhor River flooding. Some beneficiaries are survivors of a devastating community fire last year.

Our partners for this project is  Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA). We are immensely thankful for PDAs invaluable support in making this project possible. Last Sat, we officially handed over the homes in the presence of local authorities. Also, during the project period, we distributed 72 ‘Care Buckets’ containing mosquito nets & essential hygiene kits to the community.

The shelters’ main structure were constructed with concrete pillars (comprised of iron rod, cement, gravels, & sand), metal sheets (for roofing), & bamboos/woods (for ceiling & wall). The walls were built with “bamboo nets” which was then covered by mud plastering. On average each shelter was built with dimensions of 16 ft (L) x 15 ft (W) x 8 ft (H), with 9 main pillars. However, in some cases, due to small land sizes, shelters size were reduced by 10-15%.  Also, some homes were built adjoined.

We’re happy that we could complete this project successfully with PDA’s help.

The built shelters, expected to last 4-5 years, offer these families much-needed security and stability, allowing them some extra time to rethink, & rebuild their lives with dignity.
